General health check
Fits when: A tree looks different than it used to, or you just want a professional read on its overall condition with no specific concern driving it.
Trade-off: Usually the quickest and least involved option, but may lead to a recommendation for something more specific if an issue turns up.
Species-specific care consultation
Fits when: You know the species and want guidance tailored to it — pruning timing, watering, or vulnerabilities particular to that tree.
Trade-off: More useful when you already have basic facts about the tree; less useful as a first step if you are not sure what is actually wrong.
Pre-decision second opinion
Fits when: Someone has already recommended pruning or removal and you want an independent read before committing.
Trade-off: Adds a step and some cost before moving forward, but can prevent unnecessary work or catch something the first opinion missed.
Referral to a formal inspection
Fits when: The consultation turns up something that genuinely needs documentation — for a permit process, an insurance question, or a dispute.
Trade-off: Not something a general consultation replaces; see our tree inspection page for what that more formal process involves.
