A tree that looks dead can be dormant. A tree that looks fine can be dying from the inside. The difference is usually checkable — but not always, and knowing which case you're in matters more than guessing.

Why "dead or dying" is actually three different questions

A tree that has people worried is almost always one of three things: genuinely dead throughout, alive but declining from stress or disease, or perfectly healthy and doing something seasonal that reads as alarming out of context. Each one calls for something different — nothing, monitoring, or a professional look — and they can produce similar first impressions from the ground. The other complication is scale. A tree is not always all-or-nothing. A section can die — one limb, one side, the crown but not the trunk — while the rest of the tree carries on undamaged. That kind of localized dieback is common and is not the same problem as a tree that is dead throughout, even though a photo of the dead section alone can look identical to one. This is also where the limits of remote diagnosis show up. A description or a photo can rule some things in or out, but bark that looks fine in a picture can sit over wood that is not, and a texture or sound that would answer the question in person doesn't always come through in an image. When the checks below leave you genuinely unsure, that uncertainty is information, not a failure to look hard enough — it is exactly the case where an on-site look is worth having.

Checks you can run yourself, in order

  1. The scratch testUse a fingernail or a small knife to scratch a small patch of bark on a young twig or a low branch, just enough to see the layer underneath. Green and moist means that part of the tree is alive. Brown, dry, and brittle underneath means that section is dead. Test more than one spot and more than one branch — a single dead twig does not mean the whole tree is dead, and a single living one does not clear the whole tree either.
  2. Bark conditionHealthy bark is attached and intact. Bark that is peeling away in sheets, splitting along the trunk, or missing in patches to reveal bare wood underneath is a sign that section has been dead or dying for a while — bark that has lost its living connection to the wood beneath it stops being held on. Compare it to bark elsewhere on the same tree and, if you can, to a similar tree nearby; bark that looks unusual in isolation can look ordinary next to a comparison.
  3. Buds and leaves in seasonDuring the part of the year a tree should be actively growing, check for buds swelling or leaves present at all, even sparse ones. No buds and no new growth anywhere on a tree that should be leafing out is a serious sign. But this check only means something in season — testing a tree in its dormant period against this standard will make a healthy tree look dead, which is exactly the seasonal-confusion trap below.
  4. Small-branch flexibilityBend a few pencil-thin branch tips. Living wood flexes and bends before it breaks. Dead wood snaps cleanly and easily, often with a dry crack rather than a bend. Check several branches around the tree rather than one — a single brittle twig at the base of a shaded lower limb is a much smaller finding than brittleness throughout the crown.
  5. Whole-tree death versus localized diebackWalk the tree and note where the signs above show up: one limb, one side, the upper crown, or everywhere. Dieback confined to part of the tree, especially a single limb or the interior of a dense crown, is common and often has a local cause — shade competition, a wound, or a branch that lost its connection without the rest of the tree being affected. Signs consistent across the whole tree, at every level and on every side, point to something systemic.

What to make of what you find

  • The whole tree is bare with no buds, in a season it should be leafing outA genuinely serious sign if the tree is deciduous and it is the growing season locally. This is a case where the visual extent from the ground is often smaller than what is underneath, and it is a reasonable point to move from self-checking to a professional look.
  • The scratch test comes back green on some branches and brown on othersMixed results are normal on a stressed or partially declining tree — this is not a contradiction, it is the localized-dieback pattern described above. What matters is the proportion and location of what came back brown.

The seasonal-dormancy trap, and why it matters here

Most of the tree canopy across San Diego County is evergreen — it does not go through the bare, dormant winter cycle that would otherwise make a leafless tree an obvious non-issue. That makes the exception worth knowing: a number of deciduous species are commonly planted here too, both as street trees and in yards, and a deciduous tree still follows its own dormancy cycle regardless of the mild climate around it. A bare deciduous tree in late fall or winter is very likely doing exactly what it is supposed to do, not dying. The practical problem is that "my tree has no leaves" reads the same to a worried homeowner whether the cause is normal dormancy or a real decline, and the two calls for action are completely different. The scratch test is what breaks that tie without waiting for spring to confirm one way or the other — a dormant deciduous tree will scratch green under the bark on its twigs even while bare, because dormancy is the tree conserving itself, not the tree being dead. If a tree that should be dormant scratches brown and dry instead, that is a genuinely different and more concerning finding than simple bare branches in the wrong season would suggest.

Questions people ask

Can you tell me if my tree is dead from a photo?

Sometimes a photo makes it obvious — bark gone from the whole trunk, fungal growth at the base, a crown that is uniformly bare and brittle in season. But a photo has real limits: it can't show what the scratch test would reveal under the bark, it flattens a tree into one angle, and it often can't convey texture or sound. Where a photo is ambiguous, that ambiguity is the honest answer, not a reason to guess harder.

My tree lost all its leaves but it's not fall. Is it dying?

It is worth checking, but leaf loss outside the normal season has more than one cause — drought stress, root disturbance, pest pressure, or disease can all trigger early or unseasonal leaf drop without the tree being dead. Run the scratch test on several branches. If they come back green, the tree is alive and something is stressing it, which is still worth having looked at but is a different situation than a dead tree.

Is a dead tree still standing dangerous even if it hasn't fallen and nothing looks broken?

Yes, and this is one of the more important points here. A standing dead tree keeps losing structural integrity even while it shows no visible sign of movement — wood that has been dead for a while becomes progressively weaker and more prone to failure than it looks from the ground, and the failure often shows up first in weather it would otherwise have handled fine. "It hasn't fallen yet" is not the same claim as "it is structurally sound." A tree confirmed dead is worth having assessed for what it is doing structurally, independent of whether it currently looks like an obvious hazard.

Part of my tree is dead but the rest looks completely healthy. Do I need to worry about the whole tree?

Not necessarily. Localized dieback — one limb, one side, the interior of the crown — is a genuinely different finding from decline across the whole tree, and it often has a local, non-fatal cause. That said, a dead limb still carries its own structural question, especially if it's large or hangs over something you'd rather it didn't. Localized dieback is usually the lower-urgency version of this question, but it isn't automatically a non-issue.

I ran the checks and I still can't tell. What now?

That's a legitimate outcome, not a sign you did something wrong. Some trees genuinely sit in an ambiguous middle — mixed scratch-test results, a species you're not certain is dormant right now, or a tree too tall to check the upper crown from the ground. That is exactly the case an on-site look is for: it adds the things this article can't, like checking higher in the crown, examining the base and root area, and reading the whole tree together instead of one spot at a time.

Does a tree have to be fully dead before it needs to be looked at?

No. A tree that is alive but declining, or that has significant localized dieback near something it could damage, can be worth assessing well before the "is it dead" question is settled either way. Waiting for certainty isn't necessary to justify getting a professional opinion — genuine uncertainty about a tree near a structure, driveway, or anywhere people spend time is reason enough on its own.
