Palms fail differently again: their growth structure has no branches to shed selectively, so the risk concentrates in the trunk, the crown's attachment to it, and the sheer weight of a full frond canopy, especially an untrimmed one carrying years of dead fronds. The result is that eucalyptus and palm tree risks call for someone who is specifically looking for what each species actually does when it fails, not a generic pass over "does this tree look okay."
Eucalyptus was planted across California, including large parts of San Diego County, from the late 1800s through the mid-20th century for windbreaks, timber speculation that never materialized commercially at scale, and ornamental street planting — decisions made long before today's understanding of the species' failure patterns existed. Much of that planting is now mature to over-mature, which is exactly the age range associated with the summer-branch-drop pattern described above. Palms became a defining feature of the region's landscaping for aesthetic and climate reasons and are now widespread in both older and newer developments; because they are visually iconic, they are also often left unmaintained longer than a homeowner would tolerate on a broadleaf shade tree, since an untrimmed palm still "looks like a palm" in a way an untrimmed oak does not look like a healthy oak.
This is a documented pattern in the arboriculture literature for some eucalyptus species, generally referred to as summer branch drop, where large limbs fail without the usual visible precursors. It does not mean every eucalyptus is at imminent risk, but it does mean the absence of obvious warning signs carries less reassurance for eucalyptus than it would for most other trees, especially when something valuable sits underneath.
